The Holy Spirit's power is divine power. Throughout Scripture, the Spirit, the third Person of the Trinity, is described as a Being who makes great acts of power manifest. His power was first demonstrated during the act of creation, as it was through His power that the world was created (Genesis 1:1–2; Job 26:13). In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit also gave men the ability to carry out God's will: "So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the sight of his brothers, and from that day the Spirit of the Lord came upon David with power" (1 Samuel 16:13).
Jesus said the Spirit would be their constant commander, teacher, assurance of their salvation, and comforter (John 14:16-18). But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. He also promised that the power of the Holy Spirit would aid His followers in disseminating the gospel message throughout the world (Acts 1:8). Only the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the world can enable the supernatural work of soul salvation.
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit powerfully descended upon believers, and it was a loud event. "They were all gathered in one location on the day of Pentecost. They were sitting in the middle of the house when all of a sudden a sound like a ferocious wind was blowing from heaven filled the space. They observed what appeared to be fire in the form of separate tongues that eventually settled on each of them. As the Holy Spirit gave them the ability, they were all filled with the Spirit and started speaking in other tongues (Acts 2:1–4). The disciples then addressed the crowds gathered in Jerusalem for the Pentecost Festival. These people spoke many different languages because they were from various different countries.
Jesus was possessed by the Holy Spirit throughout His earthly ministry (Luke 4:1), led by the Spirit (Luke 4:14), and enabled by the Spirit to work miracles (Matthew 12:28). The Spirit empowered the apostles to work miracles after Jesus ascended into heaven (2 Corinthians 2:12; Acts 2:43; 3:1–7; 9:39–41). Spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues, prophecy, teaching, wisdom, and other manifestations of the Holy Spirit's power were given to all of the early church's members.
All those who put their faith in Jesus Christ are infused with the Holy Spirit right away and forever (Romans 8:11). Additionally, the Holy Spirit continues to work in and through believers to carry out His will, despite the fact that some spiritual gifts (like prophecy and speaking in tongues) have faded away. His power empowers us to carry out His work and spread the gospel by guiding, convicting, teaching, and empowering us. We should never take for granted the incredible gift of the Holy Spirit's mighty indwelling.
